Global steel production in September 2022 increased by 3.7% y/y

Global steel production in September 2022 increased by 3.7% compared to September 2021 – up to 151.7 million tons. This is evidenced by the global rating of 64 steel-producing countries World Steel Association.

Total steel production in the CIS countries and Ukraine in September 2022 fell by 21.9% y/y – to 6.7 million tons.

The top ten producing countries, according to World Steel, include:

  • China – 87 million tons (+17.6% compared to September 2021);
  • India – 9.9 million tons (+1.8%);
  • Japan – 7.1 million tons (-12.3%);
  • USA – 6.6 million tons (-7.5%);
  • Russia – 5.7 million tons (-6.8%);
  • South Korea – 4.6 million tons (-15.4%);
  • Germany – 2.8 million tons (-15.4%);
  • Turkiye – 2.7 million tons (-19.4%);
  • Brazil – 2.7 million tons (-11.7%);
  • Iran – 2.7 million tons (+26.7%).

In January-September 2022, world production decreased by 4.3% compared to the same period in 2021 – to 1.405 billion tons. The CIS countries in 9 months of 2022 reduced production by 18.5% – to 65.8 million tons .

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2021 global steel output increased by 3.7% compared to 2020 – up to 1.95 billion tons. Ukraine in 2021 increased production by 3.6% – to 21.4 million tons. The country took 14th place in the global ranking of 64 steel-producing countries.
